Start from the manual step that annoys you most and see whether a connection removes it, rather than automating for its own sake.
Where an open API earns its place
If you have unusual workflows or your own systems, an open API is the difference between bending your business to the software and bending the software to your business. Add connections to fix a specific, painful gap, not to build a clever machine that needs constant babysitting.
